It's 8 from me.What began as one man’s experimental game development hobby in 2011 has evolved into one of the most impressive block-based fantasy adventures yet seen. Wollay calls this an 'exploration RPG', and levelling up and grinding for legendaries is a game in itself. I'm giving it 7 rubber chickens.įor now, I'm just enjoying the ambiance. But because Version 1.0 is so far away, I feel comfortable leaving it on the shelf for a little while. I can see so much potential in Cube World. But with just two humans at work on Cube World, perfecting the game is going to take a long time. Wollay did recently double his production team his wife 'Pixxie' is now working on the game as well. What if I disagree with the balance tweaks? What if the story, when it eventually gets put in, isn't to my liking? What if I never ride a cat? And it's a terrible kind of anticipation. He's listening to feedback from all his fans, and is constantly fixing bugs and adding new items, mobs, and gameplay features. It's obvious that Wollay has a very clear vision of what he wants to create with Cube World. I want to ride a cat sooo badly! The camera controls get a bit funky when you're indoors, too. It is possible to tame just about every wild animal you meet by feeding it it's favourite food, but I haven't got the hang of that yet. If it weren't for the random battles with friendly and hostile NPCs, Cube World would feel like a very empty place. There is no tutorial at all, and the non-player characters aren't much help. even the trolls! It's a lot like old-school Japanese role-playing games.Īnd like those old-fashioned JRPGs, it definitely drops you in the deep end. I do like how slain creatures will de-rez into little cubes, just like in Tron! Wollay certainly likes his references.Įven more so, The Legend of Zelda is clearly a big influence on Cube World all the characters have big heads and huge eyes. You simply re-spawn at a nearby angel statue. It's not like Terraria, where you lose half your money. So it's just as well that the penalty for dying is pretty low. It is udderly ridiculous, I will grant you that, Darren. I just thought it felt a little unbalanced.Īffirmative! You might easily dispatch a squad of human bandits, only to lose your life to a herd of cows. Yeah you can't just spam your attacks like crazy, it's clear that a lot of thought has gone into how the combat works. Potions heal instantly, but gobbling down food takes time. Players must make deft use of both Quick Attacks and Charge Attacks, and timing is very important! A dodge at just the right moment can mean the difference between life and death. You can choose from a variety of fantasy races too, but being a frog man or a lizard man won't affect your abilities, only your appearance. When creating your character you can choose to be a Warrior, a Mage, a Ranger, or a Rogue each with their own distinct play style.

The graphics look much better than Minecraft (if you've got a decent graphics card), and there's far more variety in terms of enemies, and the loots they drop. There is no mining at all instead the focus is on slaying progressively more dangerous foes, scoring rare loots, and seeking new challenges in distant lands. But the way Cube World plays is radically different. The game isn't finished, but it is playable. And just like Minecraft when we first reviewed it three years ago, Cube World is currently being sold as an 'Alpha'. Volumetric pixels! Like Minecraft, Cube World was created by just one man in this case a German programmer called Wolfram von Funck or 'Wollay' to his friends.

And absolutely everything is made out of little cubes. It's set in a randomly-generated digital realm where players can battle monsters, craft new gear, and explore lands of majesty and wonder. At first blush, Cube World appears to be a copy of Minecraft.
